What Needs a Permit in Lafayette, and What Doesn’t

- Selling, serving or allowing alcohol.
- Sound above the legal limits.
- Opening the event to the public, which can bring a security requirement with it.
- Selling anything, which may need a separate licence.
Lafayette’s Alcohol and Noise Control Division
The Alcohol and Noise Control Division handles both halves of the noisiest question you will face. It sits within Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Development and Planning arm and issues the special event alcoholic beverage permit and the sound variance. Questions that usually get split between separate offices stay in one conversation here.
That is worth knowing up front, because the alcohol application itself asks whether you will need a sound variance. You can settle both together.
Venues Must Sign Off on Alcohol Service
If you don’t own the property where the event is held, Lafayette requires a letter of permission from the property owner. It must state that you are allowed to sell, serve, or allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages there, and it must include the owner’s contact number and signature, along with the property address and the event dates.
A signed venue contract is not the same document. Plenty of venue agreements say nothing about alcohol specifically, and the city is asking for something that does. Raise it when you book, because a venue may need time to approve the wording, and the permit will not be issued without it.
Sound Variance, and the Night Limit
Lafayette publishes legal sound limits, and the nighttime limit is lower than the daytime limit. If your event exceeds either limit, you need to apply for a Sound Variance.

The permit runs for a short spell of consecutive days, so a longer event needs more than one application.
