What You Need to Play Yardzee
Yardzee is simple to set up and even easier to play, which is exactly why it’s a go-to game for parties and events.
You’ll need:
- 5 oversized dice
- A bucket or container for rolling
- A scorecard and marker
How to Play Yardzee (Simple Rules Anyone Can Learn Fast)
Yardzee is easy to pick up, but there’s just enough strategy to keep things interesting. The goal is to score the most points by rolling specific dice combinations; but keep this in mind: each scoring category can only be used once per game.
That means every roll matters.
How a turn works
- Roll all 5 dice
- Set aside any dice you want to keep
- Re-roll the rest (up to 3 total rolls per turn)
- Choose one scoring category to apply your final dice
The strategy element
Each category on the scorecard can only be filled once, and once you use a category, it’s gone for the rest of the game.
If you don’t roll what you want, you may have to “burn” a category with a low (or even zero) score
Players must decide:
- Take decent points now?
- Or risk it for a better roll?
Scoring categories
Each turn, you must fill in one category on the scorecard:
- Ones–Sixes: Add up all dice showing that number
- Three of a Kind: Total of all dice if at least three match
- Four of a Kind: Total of all dice if at least four match
- Full House: Three of one number + two of another
- Small Straight: Sequence of four numbers (like 2-3-4-5)
- Large Straight: Sequence of five numbers (like 1-2-3-4-5)
- Yardzee: All five dice match
- Chance: Add up all dice, any combination
Winning the game
- Continue until all categories are filled
- Add up all scores
- Highest total wins

How the Yardzee Scorecard Works (Quick Breakdown)
The scorecard might look intimidating at first, but it’s actually pretty simple once you know what you’re looking at. It’s divided into two main sections and each category can only be used once.
Upper section (Ones–Sixes)
- Add up all dice that match the number listed
- Example: If you roll three 4s → score 12 in the “Fours” row
- Goal: Rack up as many points as possible across these rows
Lower section (combinations)
This is where the more exciting plays happen:
- Three/Four of a Kind
- Full House
- Straights
- Yardzee
- Chance
One key rule to remember
- You must choose one category per turn
- Once it’s filled, you can’t use it again
What if your roll doesn’t fit anything?
- You’ll have to take a zero in any open category
- This is where strategy really comes into play

Example Round of Yardzee (How It Actually Plays Out)
Let’s say it’s your turn, and you roll:
First roll: 3, 3, 3, 5, 6
- You’ve got three of a kind already (three 3s)
- You decide to keep the 3s and re-roll the 5 and 6
Second roll: 3, 3, 3, 3, 2
- Now you have four of a kind
- You could stop here and score it…
- Or risk one more roll to try for a Yardzee (five of a kind)
Third roll: 3, 3, 3, 3, 3
- Boom! Yardzee!
Now you choose where to score it:
- Take the Yardzee category for a big point bonus
- OR use it in another category (like “Threes”)
Here’s where strategy comes in:
- If you already used your Yardzee category earlier, you’ll need to place this roll somewhere else
- If you don’t like your roll, you might have to “burn” a category with a low score
How to Set Up Yardzee at Your Event
Yardzee is incredibly low-effort to set up, but a few smart choices can turn it from “just another game” into a go-to gathering spot at your event.
Choose the right location
Start by choosing a spot that people are already drawn to. Yardzee works best on grass or turf, but placement matters more than anything. Setting it up near seating areas, the bar, or food stations makes it easy for guests to wander over, join a round, or watch for a few minutes before jumping in.
Create a game-friendly space
You don’t need a ton of space, but players should have enough room to roll comfortably without bumping into other guests. Have a small table or a clipboard for the scorecard to keep things organized without making it feel overly structured.
Make it easy to jump in
To keep the game approachable, make it obvious that anyone can join.
- Keep dice in a bucket or container so everything stays together
- Leave the scorecard visible with a marker
- Add a simple sign like “Grab the dice and play!”
Pair it with other lawn games
Pairing Yardzee with other lawn games like cornhole or giant Jenga creates a casual game area where guests can rotate between activities without feeling locked into one thing.
