With four friends bringing sides, each brings about 4 to 5 cups, so everyone knows how much to make, and the table has enough.<\/p>\n<h3>Ask Guests to Bring Ready-to-Serve Friendsgiving Dishes<\/h3>\n<p>Add one rule to the sign-up: every guest dish arrives ready to serve, whether that&#8217;s cold, at room temperature, or hot in its own slow cooker or insulated carrier. Keep your oven free for the turkey. Oregon State University Extension estimates an unstuffed 12- to 14-pound bird takes about 3 to 3\u00be hours at 325\u00b0F, so the oven is busy most of the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The turkey then rests for about 20 minutes before carving, which opens a short window. If one dish needs a warm-up, agree on it ahead of time and give that single dish the slot.<\/p>\n<p>Ask anyone bringing a slow cooker to note it on the sheet, so you know how many outlets the food table needs.<\/p>\n<p>Any dish that needs reheating should reach 165\u00b0F before it goes out, then stay at 140\u00b0F or higher. The University of Tennessee Extension advises using a slow cooker only to keep hot food hot, so reheat first. A food thermometer tells you when it&#8217;s done: 165\u00b0F in the thigh, the wing, and the thickest part of the breast.<\/p>\n<p>For a lower-effort main, a turkey breast, a store-roasted turkey, or a ham all work well.
