A dinner in a restaurant&#8217;s private room, a shower in a function hall that holds its own licences, a party inside your own home: none of that starts a permit conversation.<\/p>\n<p>What starts one is moving outdoors onto ground the City has a say over. The tier affects how your application is handled. It does not decide whether you file one.<\/p>\n<p>The ground you are standing on decides that, along with what you are bringing. Alcohol, amplified sound and equipment each pull you into the process on their own, so check the City&#8217;s list before assuming you are under anything.<\/p>\n<p>The City is also explicit that being private does not get you out of it:<\/p>\n<p>&gt; &#8220;Whether the event is free or ticketed, open to the public, or invitation-only, it doesn&#8217;t matter \u2014 you still have to apply.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So being a private party is not an exemption in Boston. The property type matters. The application by itself approves nothing. The Fire Department aggregates canopies that do not have enough clear space between them, so splitting one large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reventals.com\/boston-ma\/party-event-rentals\/tents-rentals\/?last_source_tracking=Event+Permits+in+Boston%2C+MA+%7C+What+Does+Your+Event+Need%3F&amp;utm_campaign=Boston+Marketing&amp;utm_medium=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tent<\/a> into several small ones does not necessarily keep you under anything. Above a certain size, plans have to be signed by a licensed contractor, and larger again they need an engineer&#8217;s or architect&#8217;s stamp. That puts who supplies and installs your tent inside the permit itself.<\/p>\n<p>Flame certification can attach to more than the tent fabric. Ask the Fire Department which items on your order need certificates, and get the numbers from your supplier when you book.<\/p>\n<p>There is a second disagreement here worth knowing about. One City page suggests a cluster of small tents is fine if they are touching and have no sides. The Fire Department&#8217;s own document requires clear space in all directions and aggregates anything closer than that. They are addressing different things, and side by side they point opposite ways. Treat neither arrangement as automatically safe, and ask the Fire Department how your cluster will be counted.<\/p>\n<p>On staking, Boston&#8217;s park rules bar digging up or disturbing turf. State-owned land sits outside the City&#8217;s process entirely, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway is run by its own conservancy with its own event process.<\/p>\n<p>If your site is one of those, the Outdoor Public Event application is not your starting point. Ask the venue who owns the land before you file anything.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-ask-before-you-book\">What to Ask Before You Book<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Who owns this ground, and is it inside the City&#8217;s process at all?<\/li>\n<li>Is this address residential, and does that change whether I apply?<\/li>\n<li>Which departments will be on my checklist?<\/li>\n<li>Can we stake here, or do tents need weights?<\/li>\n<li>How will a cluster of small tents be counted?<\/li>\n<li>Which flame certificates do you need, and can my supplier provide the numbers?<\/li>\n<li>Do I need an EMS permit at this size?<\/li>\n<li>Which district police captain signs, and how do I reach that office?<\/li>\n<li>If alcohol is part of this, what does Parks say about this specific site?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"who-to-call-in-boston\">Who to Call in Boston<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Mayor&#8217;s Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing<\/strong> runs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/consumer-affairs-and-licensing\/how-apply-host-public-event-boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Outdoor Public Event process<\/a> and issues the final permit.
