That matters if you were planning a canopy. We\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">won&#8217;t tell you a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reventals.com\/n-virginia-dc-va\/party-event-rentals\/tents-rentals\/?last_source_tracking=Event+Permits+in+Northern+Virginia+%26+DC+%7C+What+Does+Your+Event+Need%3F&amp;utm_campaign=N+Virginia+Dc+Marketing&amp;utm_medium=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tent<\/a> is banned because the handbook doesn&#8217;t<\/span>\u00a0say that, but we would ask DPR what counts as installing a structure before you place an order.<\/p>\n<p>A few more that shape the day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Charcoal grilling is the only grilling allowed<\/strong>, in areas DPR designates. <strong>Gas and propane tanks are strictly prohibited<\/strong>, which rules out most catering setups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No grilling of any kind on athletic fields or playgrounds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nothing runs outside DPR operational hours.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pools and gyms are not available to individuals for private parties.<\/strong> Indoor parties go in multipurpose rooms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"dc-fields-table-chair-rules\">DC Fields Table &amp; Chair Rules<\/h2>\n<p>This one catches people who have already paid. DPR may require a letter of support from the <strong>Advisory Neighborhood Commission<\/strong> for events using amplified sound, for larger events, and for events in or around residences. Other District agencies may also require letters.<\/p>\n<p>An ANC is a community body that meets on its own schedule, so its calendar, and not the application form, becomes your real deadline. A charity walk with no entry fee still trips that, because collecting donations counts. After your event, a financial form goes back to the Park Authority, and the county expects your vendors to handle their own sales tax and any permits of their own.<\/p>\n<p>For a plain picnic booking, remember the permit is the reservation. Fairfax is explicit that without the permit &#8220;the reservation is not confirmed&#8221;, and the picnic department does not take bookings over the phone. Applications for the coming weekend close before the weekend arrives, so a late idea on a Friday is next week&#8217;s booking.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alcohol-rules-in-virginia-and-dc\">Alcohol Rules in Virginia and DC<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In Virginia, an ordinary person can get a license to serve alcohol.<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Virginia law gives banquet licenses &#8220;to persons in charge of private banquets,&#8221; and the license lets the holder sell or give away\u00a0<strong>wine and beer<\/strong> in the areas approved for the occasion.<\/span>\u00a0Two things matter there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You do not have to be a business.<\/strong> An individual in charge of the banquet can hold the license.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You can charge for the drinks.<\/strong> Some states do not allow that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Spirits are a different license with a different gate.<\/strong> A mixed beverage special events license goes to a nonprofit corporation or association in charge of a special event. <strong>A private host cannot use the banquet route to serve spirits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One thing saves you a step: a hotel, restaurant, or club that already holds a retail wine and beer license does not need this license. At an already-licensed venue, the venue covers it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In DC, the licence is the smaller half of the story.<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">DC law provides a temporary license for a banquet, picnic, bazaar, fair, or similar public gathering\u00a0<strong>served with food<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0One class covers beer and wine and another adds spirits. Consumption is on-premises only.
